These two authors are radically different and yet have similarities which you are probably noticing and struggling with as you read this week. Do you think Shirley Jackson deserved the outpouring of wrath from the public for her story "The Lottery"? What would have prompted such an outcry?
Or consider Maupassant - read about his life and tragic death. Why do you think authors and artists often struggle with these issues?

It seems to me that authors have to have some type of history with portions of their writings. Maupassant wrote of sexual relations and died of syphillis. How ironic is that?

ReplyDeleteOne thought I have about Shirley Jackson is what compells someone to write about these types of stories? The story was well written and easy to understand but the message was confusing. Why would a town want to do this to their people? After reading the story a second time I kind of felt like they were doing this as some type of population control. Life sure was different back then. Maybe she felt she needed to be way out there in order to get recognized and get her works published in magazines and that is why she wrote such a strange story. It is hard to say why authors struggle with these types of issues. I am not very artistic so it would be hard to say for sure but I am guessing it is because their minds think creatively and so they deal with life instances in a different manner.
